Kidd Passed Today

Today started out very rough. Kidd passed away, Momma Cat hid her kittens, Mom’s Presentation had issues, the toilet broke and Gurtie seems to have some problems. The Bright spot of my day was a simple gift that Mom had been working on lining out came through and I got to do a bit of roping.

So my day started like every other. I did chores while Mom fed the cats and dogs. As I got done feeding Mom asked me to help find Kidd as he didn’t come when he was called. After figuring out he wasn’t around the farm we ventured out to see if we could locate him. Our heart broke when Mom and I found him Hit by a train.

Last night the coyotes were out so thick due to the weather changing. We could hear them all night and with lambing season in full swing we knew it would take all three dogs out protecting the farm. Our big issue when we first started turning Kidd out to protect is that he didn’t know when enough was enough. It appears that he misjudged last night as well and it cost him his life. Sadly, we also know that Kidd had turned into an amazing guard dog. In our hearts we know he died protecting our flock by chasing the coyotes away. He loved his job and died doing it. We just wish we could have had him a bit longer …

Okay a lot longer … I know that sounds selfish but It hurt so bad that Mom and I stopped and hugged each other while we both cried standing in the middle of the right a way. In all the years of us living here we have never had a dog get hit by a train. It makes no sense in our hearts but it happened and we can’t change that. Mom and I spent time saying our last good byes as we buried him by the rose bush he always marked. We felt it was only fitting for such a beautiful (inside and out) Dog to have such a Beautiful resting place. He will truly be missed by all of us here on the farm.

After Mom and I buried Kidd we headed for the house to gather ourselves and try to start our day. When Mom went in to feed the Cats she found that Momma Cat decided to hide her kittens in the night. We had her in a kennel with heat and food but we didn’t lock it up as she had made no attempt to move them before.

It took us over an hour of searching to find them all safe and sound in my sock drawer. Honestly, we didn’t find them until the second search through my room. We ended up tearing up the front room, Mom’s room and My room before we finally found them. I guess I left my draw part way open last night before bed and when I got up this morning I closed it inadvertently closing the kittens in. In the end we found them and returned them to their bed. However, from now on Momma Cat will be locked in with the kittens at night and any time we have to be gone for very long. That way we don’t have a repeat of this morning.

Just after Noon Mom left for her Presentation. I am not sure of all the issues but somehow The organization wanting Mom to present actually asked her to pay them to be allowed to present. When Mom was contacted about doing this presentation she was under the impression that they were asking her to donate a presentation. Mom was a little upset with the poor communication as well as them emailing her to ask for money yesterday morning. Mom did the presentation but she refused to pay to teach them something that other people pay her to teach.

When Mom was leaving to head to the church to make the presentation she informed me that since I was the one staying home, I would have to play plumber and fix the stool. For some reason it just stopped flushing. When I got into it all I had to do was fix the chain on the flusher. However, if it breaks again it isn’t my fault … LOL

After getting the toilet back up and running a friend of Mine showed up with his big tractor to get the new to me Flat bed for my truck off the truck I had borrowed to go get it. So now all I have to do is get some more money together and my friend will fix the flatbed and attach it to my truck.

After that Mom was headed home and I headed to pick up a gift that Mom had been working on since September. You see our fair building is redoing the pens inside and they are getting rid of the old sets. One such set is a 8 pen petting zoo with over head bars. Mom managed to get them for free. All they need is a good brushing with a wire brush and a good coat of paint and a little WD-40. After that they will be as good as new. We will be using them on Saturday and no more setting up pens. We will just be setting them where we want them and filling them. Mom says she is going to attach some kind of Name plate to each pen so everyone will know who is who when we have an event.

When I got home and dropped the trailer I took the borrowed pick up home and then I came home to spend some much needed time in the roping arena. I only got to rope for about an hour but as most of you know that Arena is my place to clear my head and process my day. I had to end it early as I got a call from Mom and it appears that Gurtie is having some kind of issue.

She isn’t answering her baby and he isn’t looking all that good. So with no idea what is going on and with no sign of any injury we put them both back in the barn together with some fresh water, hay and feed. We will see if we can pin point what is going on by keeping an eye on both her and her baby.

Cherry Emeralds??

Today was only my second full day running the farm. And man did I have it tough. I am working on the list of things to get done before Spring on the Farm, Cherry had a baby girl, the blades are dull so I didn’t get to shear and OH YES – I bought a Flat bed for my truck!

I started my day with chores where I found that Cherry had given birth to a baby Girl that we named Emerald. I got them both in the barn and set up in a pen before I did anything else.

Mom and I talked last night about what was on the list of things to get done before the Spring on the Farm event. This morning I was rolling right on through that list. I had to run to town to cash my check so I dropped of the blades to be sharpened. When I got home I made some calls to line out a new set of Petting Farm pens that Mom was working to line out.

After that I got started with the real work. I covered the horse stall gate that we put in this fall as we are concerned about the baby Shetland Lambs getting through and getting stepped on by the horses. I also had to move the Agritourism sign from the old pen gate to the horse stall gate as that will now be the first gate that visitors will pass through when they come to work with the horses.

I then unloaded everything off the flat bed trailer and got it to the safe zone. After that I needed to move some hay in the barn but I thought it was time for some lunch. That is where everything went side ways. While I ate I got a message from a guy that had a flatbed for the truck I bought a few weeks back. He wanted it gone today and If I went today I could get a really good deal on it.

So I finished lunch threw my list out the window and made plans to go get the flatbed for the truck. Dad and I drove 2 hours to get this flat bed. Since Mom was at work I borrowed my Uncles Truck to go get it. We didn’t get home until 9 PM. I ate, did chores typed this blog to all of you and I am now going to shower and hit the hay … Mom couldn’t have done this day any better.
